As I drove past this great big supermarket, I couldn't help but be amazed at the shape the corner of my eyes noticed. A Long Wheelbase 4 door Land Rover Defender. I turned right away and went straight to parking space besides it to take some photos. Im pretty adamant its the only Land Rover Defender of the state, since it had plates from another. My girlfriend was a bit confused as to why I was so amazed by this "Metal Box", but obviously encouraged me to go ahead and take all the photos I wanted.
As I saw through the interior I jumped form the excitement. It was a 6 speed manual!
I told my girlfriend everything that made this truck so cool, and afterwards she said:
"If you want to, we can wait for the owner to meet him and see his truck." Oh how she made me smile.
Unfortunately I didn't wait for the owner, because such an expensive truck with foreign plates in a state known for its insecurity didn't give me confidence. Still, enjoy the photos!

Some of these are tooting around campus and I bout jump out of my own skin when I see one.
The 4x4 shop that did some of my work was a LR shop and they always have a fleet of these parked out front.

Just short of brand new, from the looks of it - light setup, modified or not, is only like that as of just a few years ago. It's a good diesel that they run with now, and the six-speed is nice.

It's several hundred times cleaner than most of the Defenders I see.

I do sadly think that the owner never uses it off-road. Pretty much like every single Jeep here.

yup. One of the companies he works for made some duct work for an oil rig they are building in Tampico to send to somewhere in Africa. There were some issues because of other blueprint changes so as the designer, the company sent him to solve some issues. He was there just a couple days. For some reason, the company hired a person to accompany him everywhere and drive him everywhere because of the danger of "narcos". He didn't feel it was necessary though.

I wouldn't be surprised, with how much they cost over there. Here, they're cheap to buy and maintain, and have been the 4x4 of choice for farmers, tradesmen and the like for decades. My University's groundskeeping/maintenance team uses them.

it's booming for sure. Houston is growing at an incredible rate because of this new energy boom. My dad has a commercial A/C company and in the last 5 years, they have done work for about 50 HUGE! oil related warehouses around town and projections show no sign of slowing down for years to come. I'm guessing it's booming all along the Gulf. The population shift in Houston is now people for out of state in the masses. It is growing quick and the best part is that they are all engineers and businessmen. We'll take it! It will help all industries since they have money. Oil and energy is where the money is. Got to find a way in that biz before the oil runs out. Most of our expensive car model clients are oil/energy people from out of state buying these high end cars or getting what they have serviced here.

Its exactly what is happening here. My neighborhood is now filled with asian people who work in the refineries and oil related businesses. Its like a breath of new life to the city, and for much needed investments.

Nice. As KirkyV says they are ten a penny here but it's nice to know they are appreciated elsewhere and being looked after.
Also it's good to see them in the U.S. without those NAS lights. Ewwww.
I'd love to see what you'd do if this pulled you over. Lol.

I imagine it would be along the lines of:
Officer: Excuse me sir. Do you know why I pulled you over this evening?
You: Hey officer. Is that a 110? Diesel right? Is it a manual or automatic?
Officer: Sir. Do you know why I pulled you over?
You: It's a manual isn't it, I knew it. How does she drive?
Officer: Sir. Have you been drinking?
You: No. So what's her top speed? Can I have a look inside?
Officer: Sir. If you don't answer my questions I'll be more than happy to let you see inside and even take you for a ride.
You: Oh cool. I'm in a hurry but ye', a few minutes for a drive would be great.
Officer: Sir. Please step out of the car.
